ACT II — THE SHAPE OF ABSENCE
I must have been five or six when I first started making paper snowflakes at school, cutting them out to decorate the windows in winter.
The memory feels like a little time capsule in my mind. I remember the sheer joy of folding, cutting and unfolding the paper to discover what had emerged. Somehow, it felt impossible to make something ugly, even if you tried. There was no pressure to get it right, just the freedom of creating for the sheer pleasure of it.
The sculptural ribbon in this piece takes me back to that feeling. Its intricate cut-outs and playful curves remind me of those childhood experiments with paper, when a few simple folds and cuts could transform an ordinary sheet into something extraordinary.
Perhaps that was one of my first encounters with the magic of making something with my own hands. And perhaps, somewhere along the way, we forget that same freedom - until we learn to let go of the expectations that keep us from creating, imagining and simply being.
